The well known soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful is making a splash. They’re becoming the first soap to have a transgender character. Maya Avant is played by actress Karla Mosely who is not transgender. Soap operas have often been ahead of other types of TV when it comes to being inclusive. Many had gay characters before homosexuality was widely accepted.
Karla’s character Maya is a fashion model who was born a guy, but transitioned to become a woman. The actress says she is excited to “make change in the world through my art in a big way.” Other LGBT advocates are happy too because there are a lot of gay and lesbian characters in daytime TV but very few transgender, especially one who will play a recurring role.
“What makes this character especially poignant is that she is also African American,” explains Twyla, an outreach coordinator for Transgender Hookups. “Trans women of color are arguably the most marginalized people in modern society. So having one portrayed on a mainstream television show is great. I hope it encourages transgender women of color to come out and join our site to meet great guys who want to date them.”
There’s another trans woman of color who is making heads turn on TV and she is Laverne Cox. You probably already know her from Orange is the New Black where she plays Sophia Burset, the woman who committed fraud to help pay for her transition. Laverne is now set to star on CBS legal drama Doubt in the fall. She’s going to be a lead character and that is a big deal for a transgender woman of color!
