Bravo to Playboy, which keeps finding more reasons to be at the top of my list of favorite magazines. November’s issue features the stunning Ines Rau, officially the first transgender Playboy Playmate.
Ines is a 26-year-old model from Paris, and this iconic moment for the world is a milestone for her personally. “It’s a salvation to speak the truth about yourself,” she said.
On Instagram through Playboy, she stated her thoughts on being naked as a transgender woman. “Nudity means a lot to me, since I went through a transition to get where I want to be. Nudity is a celebration of the human being without all the excess. It’s not about sexuality but the beauty of the human body, whether male or female.”
This winter’s angel of the centerfold isn’t the first transgender woman to appear in Playboy, but she is the first nude trans centerfold. She appeared in Playboy several years ago in a special edition about nonbinary gender. Now she takes it all off for our viewing pleasure and her personal empowerment.
The magazine that was essentially launched by Marilyn Monroe—another reason I love it!—has always been cutting edge, assuming men who love naked women are as smart as they are sexy. With clichés about “reading the articles” in abundance, the magazine makes sure to have articles that live up to that jest, featuring the best writers of past generations, thoughtful political and cultural analyses, diverse opinions and ideas, and lots of salty humor. It has been a pioneer in free speech and anti-censorship advocacy.
Hugh Hefner and Playboy have also been at the forefront of diversity, striving to feature a range of models that better reflected America as it changed. One of the most progressive ideas it had was to begin featuring transgender models.
This month we have Ines Rau. Back in 1991, Playboy featured Caroline Cossey, also known as Tula, who was a sexy Bond girl that was outed as a woman born as a boy named Barry. Playboy proudly showcased Tula as a cover model with a modelling layout.
Here’s to countless more sexy transgender cover models and Playboy bunnies!
