Sometimes a relationship breakup comes out of nowhere, knocks you upside the head and leaves you wondering what the hell went wrong. Yep, that just happened to me. In hindsight, I can see there were signs I had either ignored because I didn’t think they were a big deal, or I went into denial about issues that needed addressing. When things end badly or without proper closure, it takes a lot longer to get over the heartache and move on.
To keep a good thing going or to end things as amicably as possible, self-awareness and relationship-awareness are a must. Check out these 5 signs that likely indicate your relationship is in trouble and needs some TLC to keep it from imploding.
1. Communication Breakdown
This can happen gradually or start following an argument, but when there is a lack of dialogue in a relationship there is a definite breakdown. Both partners need to share their feelings as they emerge to nip things in the the bud.
2. Mountains from Molehills
This can happen from a lack of communication. When something small that is bothering one person is kept to themselves and left to fester, resentment builds. If forgetting to pick up milk becomes an all-out-war, it’s usually a sign there are deeper issues to address.
3. Where’s the Sex?
The honeymoon phase doesn’t last forever, but you don’t want the pendulum to swing so far there’s nothing happening in the bedroom. If you have to talk about it, talk about it. Don’t let too much time pass because one week without can easily turn into one month or longer, much longer.
4. Grooming Gone
You always try to look your best on a first date and in the beginning of a relationship, but most people let things slide a little as they get comfortable – you stop shaving as often, skip a shower, gain a few pounds. Remember, looking good isn’t just for others, but helps make you feel good about yourself too.
5. Last Picked
If you notice your partner is putting his or her friends ahead of you, there’s trouble. They may be trying to avoid spending time with you for a variety of reasons. If you’re feeling left out, talk about it before you are completely closed off.
