Revelations from a Trans Man

Hands in Heart Shape

Humanity is wild. They don’t teach you in high school (or damn near any school for that matter, SMH WTF) that humans are an ever-growing, ever-shifting, ever-changing concept and phenomenon occurring on this watery marble floating in circles around a blazing star in the dark cosmos.

We’re not even close to understanding the widespread depth and height of human identity. “Man” and “woman” are not enough. Just like “white” and “black” don’t describe the depths and expanse of European and African people. The concept of transgender humanity has so many layers and levels to explore and educate.

When my transgender friend shot an amazing independent movie with me a few years ago, no one on the set knew that they were trans.

Fast forward to last weekend, when he was on a panel about black sexuality. I couldn’t believe how powerful and eye opening it was. He spoke about being born a cute little black girl, and how he grew up not feeling aligned with his body. He talked about his transition and how it affected the various cultures and families he interacted with around the world, and how his blackness affected his transness, and vice versa.

The most mind-blowing moment happened, while sitting on a panel of four other beautiful black cis-gendered men, when he revealed for the first time that whenever he was in a room of all cis-gendered men when he was growing that he always felt scared of cis-men (even though he could “pass” as a cisgender man). Wow.

We all commended him for revealing how he felt and his transition process, and what he taught us in that enormous moment. I walked away a better human, but first I went and gave my homie the biggest hug around his sweet little heart.

Sincerely,
Addi Stewart
