Incoming Pennsylvania Governor, Tom Wolfe, has nominated a trans woman to become the state’s top doc. If confirmed, Dr. Rachel Levine would be among the highest-ranked transgender women in US government.
Dr. Levine is currently a professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Penn State Hershey Medical center, where she also serves as chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Eating Disorders.
Levine as physician general would work directly with Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health and would also become a Cabinet-level advisor for the Governor. Currently serving as the liaison for LGBT Affairs for the Penn State Hershey Office of Diversity and as a board member of Equality Pennsylvania, Levine will likely bring an activist’s stance to issues such as LGBT discrimination, something that is currently not illegal in the Keystone State.
In a statement Wolf praised Levine’s decades of experience she would bring to the post, stating: “Dr. Rachel Levine is well respected in the fields of pediatrics, psychiatry, and behavioral health, where she has practiced for close to three decades. She has been a leading voice in efforts to treat teens with medical and psychological problems, as well as adults and children with eating disorders. It is important to me that we place equal emphasis on behavioral and physical health issues.”
This story is a great inspiration for trans women everywhere!
