Transgender: Being a Girl vs. Being a Girly Girl

Powder Compact and Brush

Guest blogger X talks the talk…

Many trans women I know are worried about appearing feminine, being super girly and looking perfect all the time. Me? I’m kind of a tomboy. I rarely spend more than fifteen minutes getting ready in the morning, although I l do love to get dressed up for special occasions, but otherwise I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. I am also 6 feet 4 inches tall, so it took me a while to accept my height, which is outside the range for most XX females while many XY females are my height or even taller.

On”Passing” As A Woman in the TransAdvocate

The stereotypical transwoman who might be portrayed in the mainstream media today is often covered in glitter, wearing heavy or dark makeup and false eyelashes, with a well thought out hairdo and some big fake breasts. For a time I thought maybe that was what I wanted too, but it never felt completely right. If that’s what you love, then more power to you, but it’s just not for me. I love my long, dirty blonde hair and usually all-natural look. I have about four pairs of the same jeans that are perfect for my favorite activities which include hiking and watching old movies with my husband. I can’t get into high heels very often, but I love me some cute flats with a rounded toe and a feminine touch like a bow.

One thing I do like to do is paint my fingernails wacky colors like neon green or peach. It’s something my friends know me for. But that’s really the only super girly-girl thing I do on the regular. Many people ask: “But you went through all that to be a girl, and now you’re not even girly?!” My response is, I went through all “that” (surgeries) to be myself. So that my body could reflect what I felt it looked like from the inside, not so that I could wear glitter and spend two hours on my makeup. I could have done that without surgery!

My girlfriend is also not highly femme. Which works for me, cause I’m not either and I get impatient at people who take an hour post-shower to get ready to just go to the grocery store. Be as femme as you want. There’s plenty of XX women who don’t wear dresses and are intimidated by makeup counters, too.
