Trans Revolution: Always Learning

Hands in Heart Shape

When it comes to transgender reality and sexuality, I’m still new to it and learning things that I didn’t know or don’t fully understand… and it’s cool!

I’m swimming in new waters and exploring experiences that I’ve never known could happen, considering what my understanding of sex, gender, life and love was five, or ten or fifteen years ago. Things keep evolving and growing, and it’s a miracle to behold. The reality is, EVERYONE is learning these days.

Caitlyn Jenner is learning how to be a trans woman still, and has caused a lot of controversy in the media because she has said and done things that are not supported by the trans community in general, as some have said: “because she has spent most of her life as a conservative American man.” Which is a valid point to consider, I suppose.

Not to reduce anyone, even someone as complex as a famous American Olympian who had a gender-switch surgery in the public eye, down to a single sentence; but there must be acknowledgement of the learning curve that EVERYONE is going through to some degree or another in this day and age of transgender social transformation.

That being said, I had a wonderful moment of education at the Hassle-Free Clinic recently. It was nothing but a positive learning and growing experience in every way, and I am so thankful that it happened. I didn’t even see it coming, which was the best part.

There are times when I actively seek out knowledge and wisdom about transgender truth, and I query trans friends or associates about their understanding of it, and how they can enlighten me. When lessons manifest out of nowhere, and are deep and impressionable because of the teacher or the lesson itself, they’re even more appreciated!

As I was filling out the forms for a test I was having done, there was a variety of boxes to check off. Thankfully, this place had all kinds of identifying options, far beyond the problematic heteronormative binary of just “male” and “female.” They also had five or more boxes and options for some of the questions. Yay to progress that can be tracked on paper and in daily business practice!

In one of the boxes, they asked:

Who are your partners? ___ Male ___ Female ___ Trans Man ___ Trans Woman ____ Other

So I checked off “Female” and “Trans Man,” and the person with the clipboard said, “This looks great, but… are you sure?”

I said, “Actually, I’m not! Please teach me.”

And he said, “Trans man is a trans person who is a woman transitioning into a man. And trans woman is a trans person who is a man transitioning into a woman.”

Even though I have technically been intimate with BOTH trans men and women, I have primarily been with trans women. And I thought it was the other way around, I had checked off “Trans Man” in the box, because for one of my most intimate pornographic encounters, I had made love with a person who was a trans, and who was a man. But they weren’t transitioning into a man, they were transitioning to a woman, and had taken hormones for their breasts and had a magnificent flower-like vagina sculpted by a plastic surgeon in Montreal!

I had an Oprah and Gayle A-Ha! Moment, and it was enlightening and enjoyable too!

But I still have more to learn, that’s for sure! And I look forward to all the love and mistakes and lessons and joy I experience along the way!

Thanks to the Hassle-Free Clinic, too, They are awesome! Check them out for any of your sexual health needs, concerns or desires!

In learning love,
Addi Stewart
