Sci-Fi Dating and Trans Superheroes

Alien Girl

I was recently at Fan Expo in Toronto, and it was magnificent! There were all kinds of amazing moments of human imagination, creativity, and ingenuity, and it was just spectacularly over-the-top impressive and entertaining in every way imaginable.

There were creatures of human and nonhuman origin, movie characters, cartoon characters, mash-up hybrid thingies, monsters, heroes, aliens, Star Wars fanatics with working life-size R2-D2 droids, Star Trekkies galore (I saw William Shatner!) and… A WHOLE LOT OF SEXY WOMEN AND MEN AND LGBT PEOPLE, TRANS PEOPLE, AND QUEER VIBES JUST FLOATING EVERYWHERE!

I could barely take it, ha ha. Because there also wasn’t much genuine sexuality in the air… I have to be honest. As heartbreaking as the truth was, most people were there to see dream stuff, not FEEL it! Thankfully, they had lots of “COSPLAY DOES NOT MEAN CONSENT” signs, reminding the nerd boys to keep their greedy video-game-controller-mangling hands away from the very attractive bosoms and bums of the immaculately costumed Black Widows/Princess Leias/Lara Crofts/Sailor Moons/superstar Hollywood heroines/anime princesses etc. There were endless Harley Quinns this year, as expected. Oy vay, were they marvelous to discover!

I say all this to say: I was happy to see the Sci-Fi Speed Dating booth set up at Fan Expo. I only wish it wasn’t $20 for the men and free for the women because I had just spent over $100 on a weekend pass. I have so many lovers in my life, I honestly didn’t want to pay for speed dating in a realm I don’t normally operate well in (dating is like an emotional-sexual job interview to me, and I don’t do well on them!) so I just did some recon.

There were definitely people that pinged my trans radar at the convention and I was happy they were there too, as it was a relatively fully accepting environment. But it wasn’t like there was overt attempts to connect sci-fi loving trans folks to other sci-fi loving trans folks, or other sci-fi loving men and women. Regardless, the few sessions of speed dating that were designated for LGBT folks made me happy that space and time was given to acknowledge that, when 100,000 people get together, there WILL be some folks who want to date, and a FEW of them WILL be LGBTQ.

Ultimately, I was happiest when Stan Lee (YES, THE IMMORTAL STAN LEE, in his last Canadian appearance, OMG! and yes I did speak to him! OMG!) in his 93 years of wisdom and perspective said, “When you are going to a movie, and it’s a guy taking a girl, or a girl taking a guy… or a guy taking a guy or a girl taking a girl, whatever makes you happy…” And with that single acknowledgement and acceptance of same-sex and non-heterosexual connections, I gained a higher level of respect for Stan Lee than I had ever known.

I didn’t get to ask him what would he do if he could have invented a transgender superhero, but how crazy would that have been?

Maybe next time…

In excelsior love,
Addi Stewart
