Famous Transgender Women

Caroline Cossey

With the first “sex change” surgeries happening in Germany in the 1920s, trans people have been questioning their gender longer than you might think. Not just token fetish symbols on porn sites, TS women can be found in each and every profession from Episcopal nun to writer to IT technician. With the leaps and bounds in science, cosmetics, and social acceptance, it’s often hard to tell who is trans and who is not. So today is the day I’d like to stand up and take note of just a few of the amazing trans women from around the world.

Famous and amazing TS ladies who’ve made their mark

Caroline ‘Tula’ Cossey
One of the world’s most well-known trans women. Caroline hails from England and has worked as a model and actor. In 1981, Tula was outed by one of Britain’s tabloid magazines, and there she began fighting for her rights to be able to marry and be recognized by the law as a woman. Cossey shares tales of her upbringing and transition in two different autobiographies: My Story and I am a Woman.

Nong Tum
Also known as Parinya Charoenphol (plus a few other monikers), Nong Tum was able to fight transgender discrimination with her determination and her fists. Well, more so with her legs, as she is a retired Thai boxing champion who would often kiss her fallen opponents as a sign of gratitude once she had defeated them. She continues her career as a kick boxing coach, model and actress. You may remember her from Million Dollar Baby. For more on Tum, find her story in the book Ladyboys: The Secret World of Thailand’s Third Gender, or in National Geographic’s documentary Hidden Genders.

Dana International
Considered to be one of Isreal’s most successful musical acts of all time, Dana had discovered she was trans at the young age of 13. Born as Yaron Cohen in 1969, Dana underwent SRS in 1993, which was the year she released her first album. Dana has received international success with many albums and gold hits; she was noted as 47th of the 200 greatest Israelis of all time.

Isis King
Born in the States in 1985, Isis King was the first trans woman to compete on the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model – twice. During King’s appearance on the Tyra Banks Show, where she shared her life story, Banks surprised Isis with an introduction to the top gender reassignment surgeon and offered her an all-expense paid surgery. King is part of the growing number of transgendered people in film and television in North America.
